Understanding Medical Procedure Codes
Medical procedures in the United States are identified by two coding systems:
- CPT codes (Current Procedural Terminology) are 5-digit numeric codes created by the American Medical Association. They cover doctor visits, surgeries, lab tests, and most medical services. Codes starting with 0-9 are CPT codes.
- HCPCS Level II codes start with a letter (A-Z) followed by 4 digits. These cover things CPT doesn't: ambulance rides, wheelchairs, drugs given by injection, dental work, and services specific to Medicaid.
We translated all 3,390 codes used in Nevada Medicaid into plain English. The "Official Description" column shows the original medical terminology for reference.
